The Future of Construction & Demolition Recycling

Devens Recycling Center (DRC) is a full service, 90,000 sq. ft. Construction and Demolition Recycling facility located on 11 acres in Devens, MA. Permitted to accept up to 1000 tons per day of construction and demolition debris and 500 tons of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW, othewise known as household trash), DRC is one of the largest facilities of its kind in the United States.

With a recycling capacity of 1500 tons per day, 6 bays, and a railroad spur track for both inbound and outbound materials, DRC currently recovers over 80% of the raw material from C&D materials. This recycled material is used as feedstock for such end markets as biofuel, wood pellets, landscaping mulch, hot-mix asphalt, cold patch, new concrete, and recycled cardboard products.

We are very proud of our state-of-the art recycling equipment and our new facility, but we are most proud of our ability to cultivate reliable end markets for all of your recycled materials. We will work hard to bring you into full compliance with any Federal and/or State Regulations, work with you on your LEED or non-LEED Projects, and always strive to provide you with an environmentally safe, efficient, low cost solution for all of your C&D Recycling needs. Compliance Paperwork

Did you know that MassDEP requires that proper notification forms:

  • Form# BWP AQ 06 - Notification of New Building or Demolition
  • Form# BWP ANF001 - Notification of Asbestos Survey) be filed with them by all Building and Demolition Contractors 10 days prior to the commencement of a new building and/or demolition project

The only exception to this regulation is for residential projects with less than 20 units.

The purpose of these notifications is to protect our health and environment by preventing the release of dust and other potentially hazardous air pollutants to the air.

We are now requesting a copy of these Notification Forms from you and/or your customer prior to the delivery of your 1st load from a commercial construction or demolition job.

Having copies of these Forms on file at our office, continuing to ask all your drivers for a physical address, and the periodic testing of suspect material from non-documented loads will ensure that Devens Recycling Center and you, our valued customers are in full compliance with all Federal and State regulations regarding the proper handling and disposal of C&D Debris.

Please call us if you have any questions on this new policy and we'll be glad to address any of your concerns.

Our Vision

Here at Devens Recycling Center we are striving for 100% waste diversion. Preserving tomorrow’s environment drives our every action. Everyday emerging technologies and companies are developing ways to utilize construction and demolition material. Whether it is to convert these commodities into renewable energy or making new products out of debris that would have been landfilled only yesterday, we are committed to finding alternative uses for all the material we receive.

On the one hand, we partner with the construction and demolition firms, the waste haulers and debris producers to provide them with a processing center where they can trust that the material they generate will be handled in professional and environmentally conscientious manner. On the other hand, we partner with innovative companies who utilize our commodities to create new products or develop alternative energy thus alleviating our dependence on foreign oil. We deeply care about our environment, and want to be a leader in the waste industry always moving forward to a cleaner, safer world.

Our History

Devens Recycling Center LLC was founded in March of 2006.

Our founder, Kurt Macnamara, having spent the past 20 years in the Demolition industry envisioned a modern day landfill where construction and demolition material would be separated by commodity and reused as alternate products. Through several years of extensive research and negotiations the dream became a reality. On November 15, 2006 we broke ground for what would become the largest construction and demolition debris processing center in all of Massachusetts. Less than one year later we proudly opened our doors for business on September 6, 2007.

Kurt Macnamara is no stranger to the construction and demolition disposal industry. He is the owner of W.K. Macnamara Corporation, a full-service demolition company that has been successfully operating in the New England area for over 13 years. Kurt's commitment to the environment and his active participation with various subcommittees of the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) laid the ground work for his newest venture here at Devens. In July 2006 the MA DEP instituted a waste ban for various construction and demolition materials. This ban prohibits landfills from accepting asphalt paving, brick, concrete, metal and wood.

Recycling is no longer "just a nice thing to do" but an essential part of ensuring that the environment we leave our children is cleaner and healthier for everyone.

Devens Partners with Habitat for Humanity

Through a partnership with the Town of Bedford, Habitat for Humanity of Greater Lowell has acquired nearly three acres of land and a historic farmhouse located at 130 North Road in Bedford. HFHGL plans to renovate the existing house, and build seven new affordable homes, all of which will be designated for deserving, low-income families. To date, this is the largest project HFHGL has ever undertaken.

In addition, it is the first HFHGL project to incorporate eco-friendly, “green” building design and techniques. As part of HFHGL’s green building initiative, the entire neighborhood is slated to undergo certification under the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System™. LEED is the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction, and operation of green buildings. Compared to conventional construction, building to certain LEED standards could increase the home’s energy efficiency by as much as 40 percent and significantly decrease annual energy bills.

Knowing how important energy conservation is to affordable housing, when the HFHGL asked for support from Devens Recycling Center to continue its mission of building respectable, affordable housing in Bedford, MA, Devens Recycling Center did not hesitate to provide FREE New Construction and Demolition Recycling Services for such a worthwhile cause. Sorrentino Trucking provided the containers and hauling services. To date, we have recycled almost 50 Tons New Construction Scrap and Demolition Debris from the Bedford site with more coming in every day.

This year, Habitat for Humanity International is celebrating 25 years of dedicated service to the cause of eliminating poverty housing. We are proud to be a sponsor of such a worthwhile project and encourage others to do the same. This is a great opportunity to make a significant difference in the lives of those less fortunate.
