Is The Key To Our Future |
| Summer
Intern Program | 2008 |
|
Here
at Devens Recycling Center a passion for preserving our environment
and a commitment to future generations is the central theme of our
Company’s Corporate Culture.
We were determined to create and develop a valuable educational
program for young people who share our passion for recycling and
as a result, we established our internship program as a way to demonstrate
our focus on tomorrow’s leaders.
This
year we have been fortunate to have two outstanding candidates enrolled
in the program. We invite you to take a moment to meet our interns.

Alex
Lincoln
A native to the area, Alex has lived in Groton for much of his life.
He attended high school at the Groton School, where his mother teaches,
and is currently majoring in Chemical Engineering at Lehigh University. This
summer marks the transition from his freshman to sophomore year
at school, where he will begin the core classes for his major.
This
summer has been great! During the first half of the summer, I have
been working in the office, looking at the facility from a business
and sales person's perspective.
|
|
Working closely with Devens' office management team, I have learned
the basic breakdown of small businesses, how they are run, and how
much hard work it takes to run them. In the office, I assembled a
Tech-Binder for interested customers and prospects; I created a quad-fold
sales pamphlet to be distributed at trade shows and soon to be featured
on the website; and I compiled a list of potential secondary-market
vendors that the staff can utilize as a comprehensive database. My
internship at Devens Recycling Center has taught me tremendous amounts
and has given me invaluable experience to carry forward through college
and beyond. For the second half of the summer I will be working in
the plant alongside the operations manager and floor crew. I anticipate
learning just as much in the plant as I did in the office. From the
two experiences, I hope to gain a comprehensive understanding of the
company; to view Devens Recycling Center as an unit powered by several
very different, yet equally important, interlocking entities. |

Patrick
Flynn
My
name is Patrick Flynn and I am 22 years old. I am from Weston, MA
and I currently attend the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester.
I am a History major and I am also a member of the mens' lacrosse
team.
After
taking several Environmental History classes at school, I became
interested in the different methods that are used to protect the
environment. After doing my research about recycling methods and
alternative fuel sources, finding a job at Devens Recycling Center
became the clear choice.

Reflection on the program so far: Working at the Devens Recycling
Center has been a truly unique summer internship. Not only do interns
work in the office with the business end of the recycling industry,
but they also get hands on experience working inside the plant. Even
though it can become challenging labor, this type of work is essential
because it gave me as an intern special insight to the actual process
of managing C&D waste. In addition, the staff at Devens Recycling
Center is extremely friendly and easy to work with. This is an ideal
internship for someone who interested in the recycling process and
is also looking for a job that is more than just sitting behind a
desk. |
